Spam trap
A spam trap is an email address created or repurposed by mailbox providers and anti-spam organizations specifically to catch senders with poor list hygiene; mailing one signals that you collect addresses without proper consent or cleaning, and it can severely damage sender reputation.
How they work
There are two common kinds. Pristine traps are addresses never used by a real person, planted to catch scrapers and purchased lists. Recycled traps are formerly real addresses that were abandoned and reactivated as traps. Hitting either tells providers your list contains addresses you should not be mailing.
Why it matters
A single spam trap can tank inbox placement for your whole list. Traps are why list hygiene matters: confirming addresses with double opt-in, removing hard bounces, and never buying lists keep them out. They sit alongside disposable emails as a core threat to sender reputation.

Frequently asked questions
- How do spam traps end up on a waitlist?
- Usually through poor collection practices — scraping, buying lists, or accepting unconfirmed signups where someone typed a trap address. Recycled traps can also appear if you mail a very old list where an address has since been reclaimed as a trap.
- How do I avoid spam traps?
- Only mail addresses people knowingly gave you, confirm them with double opt-in, never buy or scrape lists, and remove hard bounces and long-inactive contacts promptly. Real-time validation at signup helps keep obvious traps out.
