How do you validate a startup idea?

The fastest validation loop is: (1) score the idea on fundamentals — problem urgency, market size, competition, willingness to pay, and personal fit; (2) build a landing page and waitlist to capture demand before building; (3) talk to 10–20 people in the target market. Scoring helps you decide whether to proceed to steps 2 and 3. An idea that scores below 50 usually needs a fundamental pivot, not just better execution.

What makes a startup idea worth building?

The strongest ideas solve an urgent problem (people are actively searching for a solution today), in a sizeable market (enough buyers to support a business), with weak or absent competition (or a clear differentiation), for customers who already pay for analogous solutions (willingness to pay is proven), in a space where the founder has an unfair advantage (domain expertise, network, or distribution). Ideas that check all five boxes are rare — most good businesses are strong on 3–4 dimensions.

What score should I aim for?

A score of 70+ means your idea has strong fundamentals and is worth validating with a waitlist and customer interviews. 50–69 means the idea has merit but one or two dimensions need strengthening before you commit to building. Below 50 usually means there's a fundamental problem with the idea — the market is too small, competition is too entrenched, or customers don't pay for this type of solution. Use the score as a direction indicator, not a verdict.
