How referral ROI is calculated

The calculator models each reward tier independently. For each tier, it multiplies your waitlist size by the participation rate to get active referrers, then multiplies by the referrals required to earn that reward to get total referred signups. Revenue from those signups uses an LTV adjusted for the referred-user uplift (research consistently shows referred users have 16–25% higher LTV than organic users). Net gain = referred revenue minus total reward spend.

The recommended tier maximises the product of ROI × total referral volume — not just ROI in isolation, since a high-ROI tier that generates very few referrals may underperform a lower-ROI tier with higher participation.

Referral reward best practices

  • Non-cash rewards (early access, position jump) typically outperform cash for pre-launch waitlists.
  • Requiring 3–5 referrals for a meaningful reward reduces reward hunters while increasing commitment.
  • Make sharing frictionless — one click, pre-written copy, unique link that's easy to paste.
  • Show a leaderboard: public ranking increases social motivation without increasing reward cost.
